Designing the Regent Class

When I was tasked with the creation of the refit version of the Sovereign, I knew I had to draw from other 2409 ships seen in STO. The standards were set pretty high, seeing the Venture class refit of the Galaxy, the Thunderchild and Armitage refit of the Akira, among others. All of these ships had something in common, namely, selling the idea that they are an advanced version of their original counterpart, while keeping true to the basic design features. The Sovereign is already a gorgeous ship, so I knew it would not be an easy task to make it even cooler.
I took design features seen in an assortment of ships, from the Defiant, to the Odyssey, and everything in-between. Most importantly, I had to make sure it paid its dues to the Sovereign, so it kept the overall shape and size. A few key features were changed to help make it stand out, namely the forward swept pylons, and the grand arms stretching across the ship, from the front of the saucer to the rear shuttle bay. The top of the hull was ideal ground to do something to help it stand out. It's a mixture of what is seen on the Sol, Venture, and Sovereign. Creating negative space from different perspectives was massively important to making the Regent what it is today. From the side, there is no negative space between the Nacelles and the hull of the ship, akin to the Venture class. The inward facing windows on the rear of the semi-split hull is akin to the Odyssey and Sol. Some of the details under the saucer are not only directly inspired from the Constitution, but also from the Defiant and Intrepid.

In the end, keeping familiar elements from other ships, and merging them together into one glorious vessel, results in the Regent. While the Sovereign will always have a special place in my heart, I'm very happy with the end result of the Regent. I feel that it will perform quite well as Starfleet's primary assault cruiser. Keep subspace frequencies open as more details about the Regent Class will be revealed next week, including its release date. I can’t wait for you all to fly it in-game, and I hope everyone is enjoying Season 6: Under Siege! Ian “JamJamz” Richards

I would like to see a smaller ship say about a square battleship. Much smaller , more mobile, bristling with more weapons. A true battleship. I actually bought a dreadnought as I thought it would take more pounding. Yes, a little more and the ability to cloak. I would also like my dream ship to have universal components. Flying that Dreadnaught was next to impossible even with enhancements. I have actually got lucky and got a Mirror cruiser. Better handling, a little better at taking damage due to the add ons but can't use the Dreadnaught Cannons. We need a small scrapper able to hang with the Borg cubes and other of the tougher races. Bigger is not better. I'd love to have a runabout that was able to tank well.

Keeeeeripes! When will you guys ever get it through your thick cromagnon skulls: Bigger is NOT Always better. The last thing the game needs is yet another constipated packaderm of a ship. Look, it's really quite simple: all you need to do is go back to the TOS/ Enterprise paradigmn, which is a Smaller, Faster, more Manueverable , better armored, and bristling with more weapons type of ship. People in the middle of an intergalactic war in the 24th century would not be building Bigger and easier targets, what they would be doing is building ships with better fighting capabilities and much smaller crews. Why? Attrition! Lose one Humungus ship and thats 1000 to 2000 people gone, thats the equivilent of 3 to 6 complete crews for smaller TOS sized ships,. Also smaller ships are faster to build and you can crank out more of them in the same amount of time: Stalin may have been a lunatic, but he was absolutely correct about one thing: "Quantity has a Quality all its own..." The concept of firepower isn't built around the idea of who has the biggest gun, but rather on who has the Most guns and can get the most lead flying in the air. These are all facts that any 24th century strategist (who isn't braindead) would appreciate. Patch after patch you guys keep designing "Flying Brick Walls" when you should be designing FIGHTING SHIPS around sound tactical principles.

Yeah, yet another failed attempt by Cryptic to do a starship design. I'm convinced at this point that Cryptic modelers need to visit BCFiles.com and Bridge Commander Central. See how modders design ships, ask us questions, and learn a thing or two about starship design. Or, better yet, introduce a starship foundry where modders can create their own ship designs for STO. At this that way, we'd be assured of some hellaciously popular designs from all eras.

btw...there are only three KDF Shuttles i mean COMON LOOK AT THE FED SHUTTLES..... there needs to be more couse for one theres only on F2p shuttle. the feds have a couple F2p shuttles. comon cryptic. and make it look good NO MORE of this triangle shuttle crap.

PLEASE PUT IN A TYPHOON
darksixteen16 @ Aug 13th, 2012 2:12PM
I like it. Not going to bother buying the Odd now. Love my sovereign so will wait to see if it can be improved on. Hope it has universal BOFF stations and a unique console for the money.

I Hope it Will Have a New type of Torpedo.

Yay more ships. On side note here... can something be done about the horrible design of bridges for the rare ships? I mean... have you seen the inside of a tholian recluse -_- take about a cold space. I find that, at the very least, all ships MUST have crew birthing and a captain’s ready room. No more lazy insta bridges with a fancy button please. You have nice ships…now also have nice bridges.
jumpingjs @ Aug 13th, 2012 6:34AM
The underside of the ship is awsome. The top, not as good, but still awsome
zalzany @ Aug 13th, 2012 3:15AM
So I got my first Klingon to 50, and love it. I know realize why Klingon isn't as popular in my clan, no news for them in some time. You minus the universal stuff like they got starbases as well, and the zen suit. I would so rather see a new tactical ship for KDF side in the news, I love the carrier ships, but the raptor well, lets just say tact is the only toon I may play on Fed side as of my new found love for Klingon ships.

I think an Ambassador class is long overdue. There are a number of ship designs that could borrow from the Enterprise-A tech. Excelsior tech and the Ambassador tech. It's an opportunity to take advantage of existing graphics and not have to start on scratch.
stomperx99 @ Aug 12th, 2012 5:59PM
WE WANT A TYPHOON CLASS

Put up the stats already!!!!!!!!!!
kirkepsilon1 @ Aug 12th, 2012 4:28PM
I agree if players were able to design their own ships that would make things a bit easier for cryptic this was an idea I originally posted on the old forums and asked Cryptic but my question was not answered :( lol. How about more TOS ships and maybe a TNG pack that would be cool :P also more science ships the choices are terrible in that department :( great if your a engineer or Tactical loads of choice but not science why does science have such limited choice of ships????
machinespirit @ Aug 12th, 2012 4:01PM
I heard the Nebula would love to be redesigned next and come with more ...scienciness.
kirkepsilon1 @ Aug 12th, 2012 11:19AM
Hey Mr neoakiraii, made no sense at all hmmm I would think it obvious what I was saying but let me clarify for you, in a nut shell I was saying this ship is boring and unimaginative as in it was not pushing the boat out at all in terms of a new design. The other point I was addressing was why do we have to have nacells on the outside why not have them retract inside the ship, finally I was stating it would have been a good opportunity to get the community involved again with the development of a new ship even though it is just a retrofit and like I said before guess Cryptic couldn't be bothered and the last part of my previous statement speaks for itself . If this is not clear enough for you then am sorry I can't explain it any simpler than that without the risk of leaving out vital information key to my argument :). Live and Long Prosper
neoakiraii
I understood what you said, the problem is it still makes no sense and i will tell you why. Cryptic does not own Start Trek they license it, they licensed the IP, and with that they have to follow a certain guidelines with making new ships. with Champions online Cryptic can go to town and pretty much do anything and make anything how they want, which is why that game has a more flexible character creator than STO. STO on the other hand is owned by CBS and as such they can't get too creative, they have to stick to a certain guideline follow. most ships in the Star Trek franchise have one thing in common and it's they resemble the original USS Enterprise from the original show., Saucer section two nacels, and a secondary hull with a big light on the front ironically they prefer to do KDF ships, because they have more free range, example the Gorn ships, and Orion ships. As for why the Regent looks the way it does is because it's an updated version of an existing ship in the game, and as such need to keep it some what to the original. as others have stated they don't like the pylons curved forward, and as such gives people the option to switch that with the original Sovereign pylons or any of the other variants, which is why they can't make it look like a flying saucer with it's nacels inside it.
neoakiraii
I also forgot, perfect example of Cryptic making a new ship with the help from the community, but still needing CBS's okay is the Odyssey Class. Also look up Enterprise J ,26th century nacells still on the outside, that was one of the rules for making the Enterprise F was it needed to evolve into the Enterprise J, and that's why Nacells can't go inside on an updated Enterprise E. Cheers =)
neoakiraii
"STO on the other hand is owned by CBS and as such they can't get too creative, they have to stick to a certain guideline follow".... correction on that i meant ST is owned by CBS, and as such Cryptic can't get too creative.

I love the design of this ship but I would love to see a playable Typhoon class and/or another dreadnought.
michaelsdst
Typoon all the way please!
jellico1 @ Aug 12th, 2012 4:50AM
A good design however nothing is original to the parent ship. New hull new saucer new warp engines new warp nacelles , It's a new design not a refit because nothing of the original ship remains
stargazer903633 @ Aug 11th, 2012 10:25PM
sorry spelling is of tonight.
stargazer903633 @ Aug 11th, 2012 10:24PM
This ships looks terrible ani i think cryptic should either maked a ambassador calss cruiser or do more vulcan ships.
stomperx99
do you expect people to troll you?
quietwinds @ Aug 11th, 2012 9:09PM
you know i know ppl i guess like the oddessy but to me i looks pretty much like a revamped asualt cruiser, granted i like the gizzmo's but come on do ppl really love that design with all the different designs over the years and decades how about some other TOS designs "ones not so whimpy a shuttle could outgun them" or some movie ones you have over forty years of star trek to fish from lets have some variety already
kirkepsilon1 @ Aug 11th, 2012 6:04PM
I am going to be blunt here this ship is terrible boring and unimaginative if I were cryptic I would sack the artist on the grounds of unoriginality and not really pushing the boat out at all, I mean its amazing that in what 200 years star ship design apparently has not advanced enough away from nacells???? However this would have been a great opportunity to involve the community and crowd source some ideas guess cryptic couldn't be bothered maybe because they new we would think very much outside the box and it would have scared them into hiding under their tables pitty :(. So this yet again will be a ship I just won't bother with better luck next time though :)
neoakiraii
that made no sense at all.
truazguard @ Aug 11th, 2012 9:25AM
All these ships are nice but I still Waiting for that "Typhoon Class Battleship" the Fed NPC's have.....
michaelsdst
yes, I am waiting for the Typhoon too...
gideonkhan @ Aug 11th, 2012 7:33AM
I'd like see something completely different. Using a set amount of slots per ship, why not give us players a oppertunity to fabricate our own ship. Let us decide how many slots of Tac, Eng, and Sci are on our ship. Of course, keeping the same standard ship categories and unlock-able parts via C-store, like the galaxy refit's saucer undocking. Not only would it give us players a chance to customize the ships and taylor to our own liking, but it would ease the requirements of PE or Crytic to push new ships out.
neoakiraii
do you know how much it takes to make a ship, and for the animation of certain ships that have special animations like saucer separation? no way players can makes ships, because most players are not programers.
maksio55 @ Aug 11th, 2012 6:36AM
How about starting to give KDF some new content, to even things up, like it was promised at the start of F2P? So far starfleet has more ships available, more bridges, a LOT more costumes, more interesting quests, generally a lot more everything and yet they are STILL getting even MORE.
labrador305 @ Aug 11th, 2012 6:01AM
Cryptic should bring out another odyssey that is equipped with a cloak other odyssey components with mark X MACO gear and Quantum torpedoes for 5000Z THAT would be worth my money.
xenification
LOL now that would be interesting to see, however im just going to plainly say, "keep dreaming" lol
