Season 7 Dev Blog #10

Reputation System Overview

Spock worked with Romulans to attempt unification between the Romulans and Vulcans. Data, the Doctor and 7 of 9 were driven in their desires to develop their humanity. Sisko learned to embrace his role as Emissary and the culture of the Bajorans. Odo and Worf each had to rediscover their cultural roots and relearn what it meant to be a Changeling or a Klingon.
For as long as there has been Star Trek, there has been the concept of accepting and learning from the cultures and ways of other species. The Star Trek Online team has wanted to bring this experience to you, the players, in a way that was as rewarding as it is fun. The new Reputation System fulfills that desire while also giving players a way to differentiate their captain beyond class and skill point choices with an alternate means of progression that can impact how they play. The Reputation System will offer players the ability to increase their status with different factions. By doing so, players will earn new captain powers and the ability to get new or unique gear specific to the faction they’re assisting.
The first two Reputations that will be available to players are the Romulan Faction and the Task Force Omega. We released this dev blog earlier in the week discussing the Task Force Omega Reputation System and would like to now give you a more general overview of the system.
Before we get to individual reputation details, let’s talk about the system itself. Once players reach Vice Admiral or Lieutenant General they will unlock the ability to increase their reputation with specified factions through the Reputation System. The layout of the UI is similar to the Fleet System, but only usable by one player. Players will need to choose and complete projects that either earn Reputation XP for the system or unlock gear for the player. The inputs required to start a reputation project vary, but one key similarity is that they all require Marks specific to the reputation you’re working on. By playing select content that is themed to the reputation, players will earn a set of Marks that are key to progressing through a reputation type. For example, by running the new Azure Nebula Rescue queued event, one of the many new events being introduced in Season 7, players will earn Romulan Marks and those Marks are used for projects in the Romulan Faction.
There are five tiers of progression in the system and each tier offers new projects, new rewards, and a new captain power option. Players also unlock two powers to choose from at each tier, all culminating with a captain quality click or passive power for completing the fifth tier of the reputation. After completing the fifth tier of progression in any reputation, on top of all of the top tier gear rewards and powers, a new project unlocks that allows for the conversion of a set amount of Marks into Dilithium.
The Romulan Faction will enlist players to assist the Romulans and Remans in their goal of creating their new homeworld, New Romulus, in the Tau Dewa Sector – information about this sector can be found here. Players can progress by themselves or in groups via the New Romulus content, through the Vault queued missions, and in select Season 7 queued missions. Progressing through the system will unlock the ability to earn a variety of revamped and completely new gear sets, as well as opening up a new carrier pet, new consumables, unique space weapons, and new or unique Romulan ground weaponry. The unlocking of gear is only half the story with the Romulan Faction: There are the captain powers and special instances on New Romulus that are rewards for progression!

*Subject to change
The Romulan captain powers focus on critical damage vs. damage boosts, and the final click power that boosts all of your science stats by 100 for 5 seconds, allowing players to really boost the damage or debuff ability of whatever aux-based powers they can get off in that time. Additionally, progressing through the system unlocks cutscenes and new solo (with away team) instances on New Romulus that will progress the story of that zone and give you better insight into the history and current events of New Romulus.
Task Force Omega reputation is how the players earn reputation with the Federation and Klingon anti-Borg alliance. Just as with Romulan Reputation, players must earn Omega Marks by playing through select content, such as the Special Task Force missions, the Defera Invasion Zone and the Borg Red Alerts. Increasing your Task Force Omega reputation will unlock access to set rewards and unique items, as well as stores that offer anti-Borg ground weapons – you can find more information about this here. The captain powers rewards are all Borg themed and culminate with an AoE ground heal that also acts as an AoE revive and adaptation removal. It’s a very exciting and potent power that will give players new options in any ground combat encounter.
Just like the revered members of Star Trek lore that worked to improve their relations with different species and cultures, now you too can engage with another faction in STO. The Reputation System provides a lot of flexibility to the player on their continued growth as a captain, and leaves a lot of room for additional reputations in future updates.
We hope you enjoy the journey, and the new rewards, through the new reputation tiers when the system launches with Season 7: New Romulus. We’ll see you in-game!

Oh boy...havent we heard this before...the dead of PvE and PvP...making more equal for "all players" at the cost of punishing those who "do better" WHY punish EXCEPTIONALISM...is not a disease is a GIFT" please double rewards for ground PvEs and dont punish individual contributions....is not a disease....

I would expect an exceptionalist to spell better.

instead of wasting time with reputation and objects antiborg. When we throw out federal and Klingon trash and finally play worthy of the name. When will it be implemented playable Romulan faction? And finally play worthy of the name. When will it be implemented playable Romulan faction at beguin of our game experience or we will be forced to lose unnecessary time to reach a lot of levels just like as you have imposed to unlock Klingons ?

I like this new romulan reputation system thing,I would love to help rebuild the romulan star empire and possibly get them to join the federation and the new ecqiupment soon coming will be awesome!
jango1starwars @ Oct 29th, 2012 10:45AM
Someone made a comment earlier about KDF or FED players being more aggressive. There ARE NO aggressive players on STO, you want to see aggression hop on SWTOR for about an hour. This community more welcoming and far better than TOR's
sehvahn @ Oct 29th, 2012 7:00AM
The romulans should have been annihilated when their planet was destroyed because that's when they were the weakest. I say no to the whole reputation thing.
shpoks
Well...I'm going to assume that this is the KDF talking, sounds like that to me at least ;) Anyway, my point was that the Federation was never going to allow that to happen, and since the KDF and the Federation are already at war this would only result in trasfering the base of the conflict from Eta Eridani to Romulan space...and that would be about it.
diapereddoggie
actually no....ive noticed that 90% of all fed players are more aggressive then the kdf players.

This new system worries my very much. It seems (from the screen shot) like there isn't very many opportunities to earn dilithium anymore. At least with the current STF system you can run about 7 Elite STFs each day on each character and earn your daily dilithium cap. Roughly 3 hours of gameplay. With this new system, it's my understanding that you don't start earning dilithium until you've reached Tier 5 and then your "marks" get converted into dilithium. I personally don't want to have to grind for 3 months to reach Tier 5, just to grind some more, just to get a small amount of dilithium, especialy when SO many things in the game require inordinate amounts of dilithium as it is. I guess now is the time to convert all your edc to dilithium before the change happens, at least that way you'll have some to hold you over for a few weeks.

Everyone,on behalf of a friend of mine,i Want o request to have a model of a romulan holding a Baby, male and female and if this is done i will stay on STO for much longer then i thought i would

Thought the Borg were going to be the third playable race?
kirk2390 @ Oct 28th, 2012 3:33PM
One little add : I'am positive on this mather it looks great so let's wait and see what they come up with . I do not hope it's again an endless grinding like the starbase missions or the STF's in this mather .... Greets
kirk2390 @ Oct 28th, 2012 3:30PM
Well I like the idea from the Devs the system look nice the way im reading it it's a nice peace off work but somehow there is a fox in the holl so to speak. Another way off grinding billions off dillithium another point system . This game is allready prety difficult with far to many weapons to choose from far to many stuff to choose from, I like Startrek Games but STO is ridicilous it has so many stuff you have quite some problems with choosing all this stuf, why not just bring out consoles and standard guns but you can change it with an console and then nomather who your fighting !! They make the game a mess right now and over an year the player is loosing track and doesn't know what weapon to put on or what kit to get . Well I wonder just checked it out couple off times on the test server but can't say im inpressed yet it's the same with starbase and it's the same with all other stuff think just goping to follow the guide line and see what they come up with
shpoks
About the too many weapons/consoles/stuff....you do realize what you are suggesting? Why would we want to narrow down the choices of setups? This is one of the most amusing and chalenging parts of the game, to learn, test and create your individual char./ship setup that works for you the best. And for that you need choices, the more the better :) cheers
ahilles7
Like shpoks said point of having man weapon/consoles/stuff is to have different ship build, being creative, and not weapons only be narrowed to phasers and distruptors. There are lot of ship builds out there that are PVE and PVP based. And lots of those have familiar "shield stripper","power drainer","disabler" builds thanks to choises of many weapons/consoles/stuff. You have problem with to many choices than maybe STO isn't game for you.

Way to give us things we have been asking for for 2 years.... Not...

i desire 1 [PLAYABLE ROMULAN FACTION] been waiting since season, i dunno anymore lol.
captainmorgan210
It might be better if they finish developing the non-Federation faction they already have before adding another one.
landshark535
Oh Captainmorgan210, that's like saying they should fix the bugs in the game that make some content unplayable (like terradome). It's a nice sentiment to have, but we shouldn't get our hopes up on that happening.
kamikazi2142 @ Oct 28th, 2012 1:47AM
i've been playing for almost a year now, and must say, with everyone begging for the Romulan Playable Character, i'm surprised it took so long to come out with it already. I'm amazed at how so few people have voiced their negative opinion on the matter, where almost 66% of the general population has never seen a ST episode, 4% have and hate it, 5% have not and hate it, 10% have seen ST, 15% are Trekkies with these estimated numbers should it not be obvious that this game is just there to please players? so why not make another faction playable, why not? it has been too much FvsK would be nice to see a new enemy arise to make it FvsKvsR PvP would be interesting to say the least, and would the Romulans be able to "accidentally" damage allied factions in STFs?? my shields are up, but i'm still curious.
kamikazi2142
*disclaimer** was totally talking sideways about the numbers **
ebrithil1 @ Oct 27th, 2012 9:13PM
I like the idea of this, but I think if they're going to do this, they should just make this a whole new species you can choose to play as once you hit VA/LG. I also I think they should focus some people on completing the KDF side. It'd also be helpful to be able to change the color system for the UI on the KDF side. For me, being colorblind, all that red is a little confusing.
scotttetrius @ Oct 27th, 2012 8:48PM
You know if Cryptic and PW wanted to make money then when they DO come out with either a playable Romulan on Fed and playable Reman on KDF or both on either faction. Then they could make it a C-Store purchace. So that mostly 50% would buy that. or even make the playable speicies a purchaseable thing and make it Romulan Faction. that way maybe we can have our own 20-50 for a ROmulan playable Faction. Just an idea for those who want a ROmulan and Reman. plus help PW and Cryptic make money ;)
k0rsak0f
you could make a faction you need to pay for just as you need for a fed / kdf joined trill. should have the same effect.
shadowwraith77 @ Oct 27th, 2012 1:45PM
I personally think it would be awesome if they would get to the point of adding romulan(reman), as well as cardasian factions as playable race factions outside of the federation and kdf. As for the klingons yes yes they do need some more content to keep them going!
oldschooldork @ Oct 27th, 2012 12:28PM
Esteemed members of the Federation Council, I must officially protest this "help" being extended to the Romulans. While I understand the Federation seeks peaceful co-exsistance with all races, there are some that are not now, nor ever will be, interested in peace. The Borg, the Breen, the Tholians, Species 8472, and yes, the Romulans. I have been on the front lines of many confrontations and I can say from experience this is just a ploy on the part of the Romulans. They contact us, saying they need "help", or are looking for "peace", but the truth is they are trying to destroy the Federation from the inside out. They are using the self-inflicted destruction of their homeworld as a tool to elicit sympathy...then the second our back is turned, in will go the ceremonial blade. Well I for one will not stand idlly by and watch this happen. There is already a strain on our resources, we can ill afford to give more to a race that will only turn around and bite the hand that feeds them. As such, I am going to do everything in my power, and use every resource at my disposal, to protect the Federation and her interests from this scourge. If I may be so bold, while I have the utmost respect for the Federation council, this decision to help the Romulans shows a serious lack of judgement on your part. And please note that I am not the only one in Starfleet who feels this way. In closing I would like to add that any Romulans found in Federation space will be dealt with swiftly and harshly. And there will be no help for any persons traveling to Romulan space. If you choose to put your hand in the sharks mouth, you deserve no sympathy when you get your hand bitten off. Thank you for your time.

So far I haven't seen anything coming up in Season 7 that appeals to me... Maybe I'll come back to play again once Season 8 rolls around, because, as you know, I won't be missing anything since Cryptic restructures everything every few months, lol. ;-)

1k per two days, not per day extra for 700 day veterinaries. Butt what I actually wanted to say: Is that the Romulan faction then? I thought it would be playable (Romulan captain character, Reman character and of course also both BO types of both races. Reman purrhaps just male, butt still).

Supposedly late November.

>>The Reputation System provides a lot of flexibility to the player on their continued growth as a captain, and leaves a lot of room for additional grinds in future updates.<< This is your way to recognize that you've failed with the Defera-Invasion in Season 5 and that you've failed with the Tholian-Invasion in Season 6: Season 7 another "Adventure Zone" to grind again and you make the Defera-Rewards bigger and bigger... What's next, "Marks of Balance" from the Deferi for all Breen- and Defera-related stuff?
