Season 7 Dev Blog #13

Personal Log, Captain James Wells, U.S.S. Huxley

We are continuing our planetary survey in the Tau Dewa Sector Block.
The Huxley is close enough to Klingon space that we have to stay alert. Thought we caught a glimpse of a Bird-of-Prey wing at 2230 hours. Went to yellow alert and used a tachyon field to try to pinpoint their location – nothing. Ensign Novot picked up a warp trail, but we lost it near the Narendra system.
If the Klingons were following us, they weren’t looking for a fight.
Back to the planetary survey. In the public record, this is a simple scientific mission. In fact, it is much more. We’re helping the Romulans look for a new homeworld.
D’Tan is gathering followers. More and more Romulans appear to be disgusted by the selfishness and infighting among the senators. Fighting in Sela’s capital goes unchecked and everyday more blood is spilled. None of it changes anything.
The Unification movement is offering something different, and Romulans are responding. I have my doubts as to whether they can reach their ultimate goal of reuniting with the Vulcans – their cultures are just too divergent at this point.
But establishing a new world for the Romulans, a reset for their relationships with other species … that I think is possible. It won’t be easy, but like my grandmother used to say, nothing worth doing ever is.
They’ve already made a start with the Remans. In exchange for a place on the new world and full representation in any government that may result, Obisek and his fleet will support the movement. Having the strength of the Remans should go a long way toward making D’Tan and his people more than an easily-dismissed fringe group. They are a growing power.
Starfleet is keeping our involvement quiet for now, but I have a Romulan adviser here on the Huxley helping with the survey. Subcommander Mivek tends to keep to herself, but she has a keen mind and is completely dedicated to the future of her people. I value her input.
We’ve already considered and rejected more than a dozen worlds. We’re looking for an uninhabited M-class world with sufficient resources to support a growing population. Tau Dewa was chosen because it is close to Romulan space, but removed enough to keep the new world out of the internal conflicts that have split the empire since the disappearance of Sela.
I’m beginning to understand some of the trials that the Romulans went through after the Sundering. Our requirements are great, but our options are few.
The majority of the settlers will be civilians, so we cannot expect them all to be prepared for the dangers of living on an uncivilized world. That being said, there are few Romulans who haven’t suffered hardship and depravation in the decades since Romulus was lost. They are survivors.
Looking out the window in my quarters, I can see hundreds of stars. One of them has what we seek. We’ll keep looking until we find it.

mattjohnsonva @ Nov 5th, 2012 1:03AM
Well written and nicely preparing the way to New Romulus
rjewkes @ Nov 3rd, 2012 9:49PM
Yes, Grind with a reason/story to it is ok ish, but a grind for the sake of grind is not.
sentinel64 @ Nov 2nd, 2012 8:20AM
You can go to tribble to check out the action in the new Romulan sector
fliporican @ Nov 2nd, 2012 8:18AM
If it wasn't for the 2009 Star Trek [reboot] movie making the destruction of Romulus canon we wouldn't have such a good story to tell and experience on STO.
levonscott
It isn't canon. That is an alternate timeline, in no way affecting STO. Also because of IP laws we cant use the JJ timeline either.
jstagg
it is canon, nero is IN the alternate reality. The Prime dimension we play in where romulus was destroyed is where nero came from
paragon92518 @ Nov 2nd, 2012 7:50AM
Narendra system !!!...wink*, wink* :D
captaind3 @ Nov 2nd, 2012 6:55AM
Yes Yes! Now you're talking. Grind is okaaaay for advancement and gameplay (sometimes) but the story is what will keep us coming back. Stuff like this puts smiles on faces. More story, more story.
stultus1980 @ Nov 2nd, 2012 4:56AM
Is this the Mirror Forum? That's two blogs I've read now for which the majority of comments were positive. Go back to your own dimension, infiltrators!!
darkdeity20xx
Haha
a90211
HEY! I'm not one to complain, but perfect world finally did something right. So, why not praise and encourage them.
starfish1701 @ Nov 1st, 2012 11:09PM
Fantastic. I really like these teasers, they add so much background story. As someone has already said, can we please have a KDF one too?
darkdeity20xx
While you are at it... can it be in Klingon???
marman01
I would love to see versions of these blogs but for more Klingon stuff, hopefully we'll see that soon? :D
kirimuffin @ Nov 1st, 2012 10:47PM
Sounds cool. Can we get some KDF background too, please? I want to know why J'mpok has decided to help with the Romulans.
d3cubed
agreed, why have the klingons decided to be romulanfriends all of he sudden?
afree100
maybe then intend to reveal that in the actual game itself, possibly already have it as a unlock

Maybe Cryptic intends to reveal that in the actual game itself, possibly already have it as a unlock.

To the Devs - please add cross faction team invites for end game missions. The lack of this option is a major oversight and just complicates things. I know we are able to create a private match, but that just makes things more complicated than they need to be! There are many of us (the majority of the players I'm sure) who have characters both Federation and KDF, who would like to do a quick match with friends currently logged in on the other faction, but we cannon as alegiance doesn't match. This needs to be changed for STF purposes both ground and space.
megacharge07
cannon=cannot*, no edit option?
foundrelic @ Nov 1st, 2012 9:49PM
I really hope S7 is story heavy. I'm so sick of the grindfest the game's become.
bassmas314
I'm also hoping for more story content this season. I was quite disappointed that there wasn't any in season 6, having just completed the Undine storyline not long before S6 launched. Hopefully S7 will rectify that.
enyinaya
I really hope so too.
sharpie65
there won't be any new story content until season 8 (early 2013) at the earliest
bluedarky
They already said that the next Featured Episode will be around the anniversary, so it might be before Season 8.
ransom2375 @ Nov 1st, 2012 6:44PM
I really enjoy these story blogs. Thats what we need. And it's a good build up. I guess thats how you (Cryptic) look at them too. Advertisement for a new season. Thats the reason why we only get these storys before a new release. But how great would it be to get the storys in the game, where all players can read them? You reach more players, and we could always reread them easily if you would implement a Federation / KDF News Service database. This way you could even toss storys in there between big updates. Maybe accompanied with a stand alone mission from time to time. So much potential! PS: I was very pleased to see a Nova class for this planetary survey mission! Good attention to canon. That's the kind of mission the ship was build for. :)
lordrevan35 @ Nov 1st, 2012 6:40PM
I love the way the mission log is writen, it's like right out of the tv. show. And I do hope we get to have some of these planetary suveys as a mission so we can fleet like we are having a helping hand on finding the Romulans a new homeworld.
rblaher988 @ Nov 1st, 2012 6:09PM
I dearly love the way your doing this story!!!
nynik @ Nov 1st, 2012 6:05PM
Such back-stories need to be in the game, not on a news blog nobody will be able to find after a week.
malan29 @ Nov 1st, 2012 5:58PM
This is what we need in STO, more content and storyline, less grind and money making
chiefkelvin @ Nov 1st, 2012 4:48PM
That is awesome.
darramouss1 @ Nov 1st, 2012 4:29PM
This is the type of storytelling that I love about the Trek series. If you can bring it to STO like this on a regular basis, well then, the sky's the limit!! Keep up the good work, dev team.
r3ad2 @ Nov 1st, 2012 4:20PM
epic!!
rjcfoxtrot @ Nov 1st, 2012 4:06PM
Cool. Can we get a Klingon log entry to get more perspective on what's spurring their involvement?
qutoth
Absolutely agree. We need the Empire's view of this. Don't cop out of your own backstory please!
ransom2375
Agreed. Like you talked about it in the last podcast. Would be great to read the motivations of the Klingons. Maybe from J'mpok's point of view. Why are they helping D'Tan
kirimuffin
Yes, thank you.
zeuxidemus001 @ Nov 1st, 2012 4:01PM
You are all mere agents working for Sela, you just don't know it yet.
captsuns
Reminds me of what Obisek said in "The Vault".
seniorderplot @ Nov 1st, 2012 3:51PM
Sounds awesomesauce.
jonbre @ Nov 1st, 2012 3:48PM
This kind of storytelling and lore-building is one of the main reasons why Star Trek so great. I can't wait for Season 7!
theindefatigable
Agreed. Looking forward to season 7! Just...try not to wear us out with too much in the way of dilithium costs. I think a lot of us are willing to pay straight up for cool new Z-store content, but not on dilithium especially with the exchange rates as they are. Enjoying every S7 dev blog post!
psycoticvulcan @ Nov 1st, 2012 3:36PM
Very nice intro to Season 7! Can't wait for the launch.
