A New Alliance?

More now in our continuing coverage of the upheaval in Romulan space.
Unificationist leader D’Tan is presenting a new plan to develop a Romulan colony somewhere in the Tau Dewa Sector Block. D’Tan is gathering followers willing to move to an uninhabited world, and sources tell us that he has even reached out to Reman leader Obisek for his support.
When contacted by the Federation News Service, Obisek said that he is willing to consider all options for his people. “I have nothing against the Romulans as a whole, only those who have perpetuated a campaign of genocide against my people. If there are some amongst the Romulans who are willing to put aside our traditional enmities and move forward to create a new homeworld, I am willing to listen.”
D’Tan, for his part, is calling for a complete reorganization of Romulan society. “My people must reject their past. Secrecy and deceit can no longer be a way of life for us.”
The plan for a new Romulan homeworld targets several uninhabited planets in Tau Dewa space. By moving away from the area dominated by Romulan colony worlds, D’Tan and his followers hope to disengage themselves from previous conflicts and start new alliances with former enemies. D’Tan has sent envoys to both the Federation and the Klingon Empire calling for assistance, and has plans to visit both Earth and Qo’noS in the coming weeks.
“The current strife between the Federation and the Empire does not concern me,” D’Tan said. “If you look at history, the Alpha Quadrant has always been a region of shifting alliances. At one time, my people and the Klingons were allies. We could be again. And as for the Federation, they claim to welcome anyone who values peace. After the loss of our homeworld and decades of strife, my people have learned that there is nothing more valuable.”
A representative from Federation President Aennik Okeg’s office said that like Obisek, the Federation is willing to listen to D’Tan’s proposal. “We have extended a hand in friendship to the Romulans again and again. Perhaps this time someone is reaching back.”
As more information on this situation becomes available, we’ll be sure to provide it.

short sighted, the real news is the f;d changes to the stf rewards system. this new playable faction is a wasted when they are f;n the game inthe long run.
aprilthomasson31 @ Oct 26th, 2012 8:40AM
I hope season 7 comes out soon, haveing another faction will be great. hop they will do this with cardy's too.
revan1701d
A Romulan faction would be AWESOME! It should come right when season 7 comes up.
wazzagiow
sadly season 7 wont be adding a new faction. if any when it could be next year. so at least after season 8 from the way stahl was talking not so long ago. season 7 will certainly add to the story of what will happen. i myself would love a seperate 3rd faction :)
docclef @ Oct 26th, 2012 6:25AM
Anyone else getting a Vladimir Putin vibe from all this?
scottaprice
Nope.
vmikus @ Oct 26th, 2012 5:44AM
I love these news briefs, it immerses me into a role-playing mood. Cryptic, keep it up.... we love them!
mattjohnsonva @ Oct 26th, 2012 2:15AM
The Klingons are losing the war with the Federation, they are having to even forge alliances with them to fight the Borg. Now the Tholians are invading and the threat from assimilated undine is ever present. The Iconians are threatening the Quadrant with their appearance in the Burgess system, remember what they said "look upon us and tremble". I would think J'mpok would jump at the chance of forging an alliance with the Romulans, strength in numbers and a similar warrior creed. Exciting stuff.
hitherow
Actually no. J'mpok was more set on outright conquering the Romulans rather than seeking an alliance. Remember, Romulans were involved with House Duras during the Klingon Civil War, and they attacked Khitomer. Klingons tend to hold a grudge on stuff like that.
dollac @ Oct 25th, 2012 9:36PM
I will not be happy if a third faction in put into the mix when they have not finished giving the related ships and homeworlds to all the core from the start of the game races.
hitherow
Agreed. but last I checked, I don't think they're going to put the Romulans in until the Klingons are done. Last I checked..
fauth1972 @ Oct 25th, 2012 8:22PM
Ok so when is the tribble test weekend starting can't wait too see this stuff.....
megamanx82 @ Oct 25th, 2012 7:45PM
I have a theory about this next season. Cryptic was talking about giving players a 3rd faction to plat as. Most of you know what it "would" be. This would be a welcome addition to the game as I've seen numberus posts on the forums for a Romulan Faction. This may even be a release for Season 8.
captsuns
This next season (Season 7) so far seems to be coming with a new Sector Block, as well as a new adventure zone map (a la Borg Invasion of Defera or Nukara Prime)
sirepical @ Oct 25th, 2012 7:39PM
Not sure how this qualifies as a "Dev Blog" really.
scififan78 @ Oct 25th, 2012 5:46PM
With these new Dev blogs sometimes coming as a "News Report," they should consider using game assets to do a video of the report. Make it like an actual news broadcast.
sgtreusters @ Oct 25th, 2012 4:13PM
I have a theory, but if i'm right this could be one heck of a plot twist coming. The twist could be in season 8 or 9 after they have softened us up with DOff missions and the like. Remember the Iconians!
insanerandomnes
You sir, just blew my mind...
captaind3 @ Oct 25th, 2012 3:05PM
Sounds great to me. How about a set. A Diplomatic DOFF mission to make contact with D'Tan which then unlocks an Ambassador mission for your Captain to actually meet with D'Tan?
rjcfoxtrot @ Oct 25th, 2012 2:53PM
And what do the Klingons say to this request for aid? We have a statement from Aennik Okeg. What about J'mpok?
kirimuffin
I'm wondering this too. I don't mind the KDF helping Romulans as long as there's a good story justification. I just want to know what it is.
row124
J'Mpok response should be no dice. The Klingon High Council would continue to expand into Romulan space. Then the Federation will defend the Romulans. This would turn the Fed-Klingon War hot again. Somewhere in the middle of the Fed-Klingon mission battles the Iconians show up with Sela. Now that's how the story should unfold.
nalo @ Oct 25th, 2012 2:17PM
Perhaps they can bring an end to the current war?
kirimuffin
To do that, they'll have to redo the entire first arc of Fed missions. Not that that would be a bad idea, but is Cryptic really going to do it? I doubt it. :/
psycoticvulcan @ Oct 25th, 2012 2:02PM
Very nice blog. Looking forward to S7, and a potential Romulan playable faction in the future would be great. Preferably, one of the factions that are still militant.
blacklobotor @ Oct 25th, 2012 1:44PM
So...in this "Newsflash".. can we see soon a new playable race? (Romulans) By the Gods i can only hope!!
mrbluegreysf @ Oct 25th, 2012 1:35PM
So did the Iconians kidnap Sela to give her an nice vacation or are we gonna see some torture for everyone's favorite Denise Crosby spin off character? Speaking of Sela's handywork, when are we gonna see some more involvement with the Hirogen working for the Rommies? With a playable Romulan faction, would we get our species choice or Romulan, Reman, and Hirogen?
chalpen @ Oct 25th, 2012 1:10PM
"At one time, my people and the Klingons were allies. We could be again. " If "allies" mean that the romulan space is the biggest province in the klingon empire, sure. Unless cryptic changes the Path to.... for the kdf, the klingons are still at war with the romulans. Never has anyone went from war (for what, 50 years now) to allies in a blink of an eye. Yeah, you "show up on Qu'nos". Make sure you have health insurance.
bridgern
Romulan-Klingon Alliance: The Romulan-Klingon Alliance was an alliance between the Romulan Star Empire and the Klingon Empire during the 23rd century. http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Romulan-Klingon_Alliance
weiir1
They were also allies in the Dominion War.
captsuns
AND you can't forget the alliance between the Romulans and the House of Duras. Not official, but it was a Klingon-Romulan alliance of sorts.
borgeliminator @ Oct 25th, 2012 1:00PM
Finally not the stupid Z-Store updates, but progress to the game. I have been getting bored playing same old things over and over and getting crap from STF missions -_-.
wolfpacknz @ Oct 25th, 2012 12:59PM
Coming up next, J'mpok with the sports roundup...
captsuns
....followed by Miral with the weather.
atomictiki @ Oct 25th, 2012 12:50PM
It's a trap! The Romulans want to enslave us in their dilithium mines.
irrapirthesecond
IT'S A TRAP!
ransom2375
i just had to lol sooo hard! :-P
qutoth @ Oct 25th, 2012 12:42PM
So what is the Klingon Empire going to do? Why do we care about this splinter group? The KDF should seize more territory for the Empire as yet another splinter group needs our support. Do they have any resources we should just seize instead of talking to them? Why not wipe them out and take it all?
wazzagiow
well at this rate no one will have any identity. romulans wont be acting like romulans and klingons wont be acting like klingons. bacesuse we all want to be friends like federation :) lol i wonder what gene would make of it all. the other day i saw a book which was star trek meets dr.who the powers that be have just let everything get stupid. maybe we'll get a tardis in the next lockbox
ehsrad @ Oct 25th, 2012 12:35PM
oh Cryptic come on, dont tease me like that! I hope this is a build up to the Romulan faction, i want a Warbird so badly...
captsuns
DON'T SAY THAT! If you say that Cryptic might release a Romulan Lockbox instead of a faction!
typhoncal @ Oct 25th, 2012 12:22PM
In reading this small bit, is it to imply that we the community will physically building this new planet "homeworld" in the same manner that we are building the stations?
scottaprice
As far as I understand it - kind of... It seems that the Romulans are extending a hand of peace to each the Fed and the KDF. We (players) would engage in talks, help defend their space and land in new missions, build an Embassy on the new Romulan homeworld that will be built like the Starbase Project System, develop Reputation Points by accomplishing these missions of support and assistance. In a way, this new Season is more like Star Trek than most of the current content - which I love to play. This new Season allows us as players to assist in the growth and development of a recovering species - with combat justified as protection according to alliance and treaty. Who knows.... If the KDF, FED, and Romulans become friends, this Alliance may be NEEDED to combat a NEW threat that can be introduced later on - one that may not be able to be defeated without the teamwork of all 3 factions.
nataliewhite
Like the Iconians maybe?
zeuxidemus001 @ Oct 25th, 2012 12:19PM
Yeah would be cool to have romulans or atleast stuff along with the romulan rep system to deck the fake romulans out with romulan uniforms and stuff.
starbear
I know where your coming from but I do have to disagree with you. They're not "fake" romulans. To often people get it in their mind that an enemy in their favorite fiction universe must always be the "same". However history shows us that just because a once villiounus group is utterly defeated that it can change it's ways. A good, if not touchy example would be Pre-WWII Germany and Post-WWII Germany. I for one don't mind seeing the Romulans wanting a new future, one that differs from their past. They've gone through a lot, and lost so much. Will it last... we don't know. Perhaps in another 100 years this new Romulan faction could become as corrupt as the old one.
shpoks
@starbear - I think he was talking about gearing up the "alien" aka "fake" Romulans that players in STO use to portray a Romulan character with the absence of playable Romulans.
